Reflections Unit Three

Cast Down Your Buckets

The Booker T. Washington speech, in my opinion, was a very powerful speech It is something that I have always tried to express to people. The importance of working with the people around instead of attacking them. Hating your enemies gets both sides nowhere, but by learning how to bond and connect with one another can create the inevitable. Granted, this may not seem like an easy task for most. I believe it only takes one revolutionary relationship to get the rest of the world to follow. An example in today's society is having Donald Trump in office, many think the way of getting things done by hating him and that people that support him. When in actuality we would all benefit by having the 'better conversation' about it.

The Talented Tenth

The 'Talented Tenth' is a concept that the African American community has raised their children upon for years. I learned through this unit that is was Dubois that coined this idea to the population. Many parents want their children to have someone to look up when searching for light. Generally, they want their children to look up to someone who looks like them. Therefore the Talented Tenth is the ten percent of the African Community in which help the people look good. A strong education and life leader for the community to look upon. Obama, Oprah, and Spike Lee are prime examples of our day's Talented Tenth. With the status we expect them to raise our community and to represent us well.

Unit Three

As a whole, unit three represented to me the prime symbol of World War II. In how African American's were and will always be used as a tool. Though we must all stay strong and stick together. Doing so will only land us in victory. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B DuBois beautifully illustrated the building block of creating a stronger community. From now on when looking at any political stance, I would want to look for a better conversation. A conversation in which represents both sides well and includes helping the people around me. This unit showed me that there is still great change that still needs to be done, time is not up yet.
